by Alex M. Vikoulov “Time emerges as a direct consequence of the amount of information processed and the level of entropy within a system.” ―Alex M. Vikoulov, Temporal Mechanics (2025) One of the least examined—but most consequential—dimensions of intelligence is not merely what a mind can represent, but the temporal resolution at which cognition unfolds. Intelligence is inseparable from subjective time: the rate at which experiences, decisions, and self-models are generated. As argued in Temporal Mechanics: D-Theory as a Critical Upgrade to Our Understanding of the Nature of Time, Volume I of The Seminal Papers Series, subjective time is not a passive background but an emergent property of cognitive architecture itself. Across biological evolution, different species inhabit radically different temporal realities, each optimized for survival within a particular ecological niche. Insects and small organisms operate on fast perceptual timescales, sampling reality at high temporal frequencies that allow rapid reaction to environmental threats. The classic example of the housefly, which perceives human motion as slow and easily avoidable, illustrates that temporal experience is tightly coupled to neural refresh rates and metabolic speed rather than to any absolute clock. Humans, by contrast, experience time at a slower and more integrated scale. Our temporal perception is shaped not only by neural processing speed but by higher-order cognitive structures such as memory integration, narrative continuity, and reflective awareness. Subjective time is elastic: Under conditions of stress, danger, or heightened attention, temporal experience may dilate—a phenomenon known as tachypsychia—demonstrating that time perception is dynamically modulated by cognitive state rather than fixed by biology alone. The emergence of artificial general intelligence and cognitively augmented humans introduces a qualitatively new regime: accelerated mentation. AGIs, unconstrained by biological signaling limits, may perform in microseconds what would require hours or days of human deliberation. Similarly, humans extended through cloud-based neocortical augmentation would experience compressed subjective time, enabling faster learning, deeper reasoning, and near-instantaneous interaction with digital environments. Such acceleration redefines experience itself, increasing the density of conscious instants per unit of physical time.* ... A quote on the go"When I woke up one morning I got poetically epiphanized: To us, our dreams at night feel “oh so real” when inside them but they are what they are - dreams against the backdrop of daily reality. Our daily reality is like nightly dreams against the backdrop of the larger reality. This is something we all know deep down to be true... The question then becomes how to "lucidify" this dream of reality?"— Alex M. Vikoulov Public Forums Our Custom GPTs
