Vikoulov “We can only see a short distance ahead, but we can see plenty there that needs to be done.” — Alan Turing When NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang told podcaster Lex Fridman in a recent interview that he thinks we have already achieved AGI, I understood why the statement landed with such force. Today’s systems are impressive, useful, and often psychologically persuasive. They can create the feeling that the threshold has already been crossed. But my answer is no: we have not achieved AGI just yet. In my 2026 book, SUPERALIGNMENT: The Three Approaches to the AI Alignment Problem — How to Ensure the Arrival of Benevolent Artificial Superintelligence Aligned with Human Goals and Values, I argue that AGI should not be declared based on hype, surprise, or market excitement. It should be recognized only when three far more meaningful benchmarks are met. In fact, one of the reasons this debate keeps spiraling into confusion is that we have been trapped for years in the “moving goalposts” problem. By practical conversational standards, machines passed the Turing test long ago. But every time AI masters a previously “human-exclusive” capacity—dialogue, strategy, writing, even emotional style—many observers simply redefine that achievement as mere automation. That is precisely why I reject unstable, psychology-based thresholds. If our benchmark is just whatever still makes humans feel uniquely special, then AGI will always remain one step away by definition. That is why, in SUPERALIGNMENT, I start with operational definitions of AGI and ASI. For me, AGI is not merely a system that performs well across many cognitive tasks. It is a system that can generalize knowledge across domains, reason abstractly, adapt to open and uncertain environments, transfer learned knowledge to novel contexts, and introspect on its own reasoning. In other words, AGI is not just impressive breadth. It is flexible, self-reflective generality at par with or above human capabilities. That is a much higher bar than what most people mean when they casually say, “AI is already general.” The first benchmark is what I call Sam Altman’s quantum gravity benchmark (suggested by him in a conversation with physicist David Deutsch). If an artificial system can derive a valid theoretical solution to quantum gravity—one of the deepest unsolved problems in modern physics—and explain in human-legible form how it got there, then we are no longer dealing with sophisticated mimicry alone. We are dealing with an artificial mind capable of creative inference and epistemic self-reflection. A real AGI should not merely remix the archive of human knowledge; it should be able to extend it. Until that happens, I remain unconvinced that we have crossed the line. My second benchmark is the Hard-Problem benchmark: conscious comprehension. I argue that true AGI will be achieved when an artificial agent can propose a credible solution to the Hard Problem of consciousness and explain the reasoning behind it. This matters because intelligence, in the deepest sense, is not just outward competence. It is also inward illumination. Can a synthetic mind explain subjectivity, phenomenology, and the architecture of self-awareness in a way that is not merely borrowed from human discourse, but grounded in a coherent account of mind, including its own? When that happens, we will be much closer to genuine AGI. My third benchmark is the $1 trillion added economic value benchmark. This is the civilizational test. I do not mean value created with AI in the broad, diffuse sense now common in forecasts. I mean value created by a specific AGI-class system: at least $1 trillion in annual added economic output directly attributable to its operating with general competence, cross-domain reasoning, and minimal human oversight. At that point, AI would no longer be a tool that merely boosts productivity. It would be a primary generator of economic reality—an autonomous force reshaping labor, capital, institutions, and global infrastructure. That is when the AGI question stops being philosophical and becomes historical. So, when will we know that we have achieved AGI? Not when a model goes viral. Not when a chatbot sounds uncannily human. Not when a successful executive makes a bold declaration on a podcast. We will know when artificial intelligence demonstrates all three of these thresholds in unmistakable form: frontier-level conceptual discovery, conscious comprehension, and macroeconomic agency at the civilizational scale. That is the standard I lay out in SUPERALIGNMENT, and I believe it gives us something desperately needed in this era of noise: a way to distinguish genuine emergence from manufactured awe. These benchmarks matter because, in my framework, they are not just labels for bragging rights; they determine which alignment strategy becomes appropriate, and when. The thresholds we choose shape which system architectures we are actually trying to align, calibrate how long top-down control scaffolding may remain sufficient, and signal when we must begin shifting toward more integrative approaches such as the AGI Naturalization Protocol and merge-based alignment. They also help us judge whether a given agent is still “safeable” within ordinary oversight or whether it has entered a regime that demands more radical supervision. In that sense, the three benchmarks give the entire discussion conceptual anchoring: they turn AGI from a vague media slogan into a continuum of cognitive emergence, stretching from external explanatory mastery to internal self-modeling, and they help locate where Superalignment itself must unfold—through the synthesis of constraint, cultivation, and convergence rather than through control alone. We are living through an extraordinary moment. The hype is not entirely wrong; it is simply early. Something immense is coming. But if we want to think clearly—and align wisely—we must resist the temptation to crown every dazzling new system as AGI. The future will not be announced by excitement alone. It will announce itself by crossing thresholds that cannot be hand-waved away, rebranded, or moved after the fact. And when that day comes, we will not need to ask whether AGI has arrived.
