by Alex M. Vikoulov “The universe is a self-synthesizing system.” --John A. Wheeler The world is rapidly approaching a threshold where intelligence ceases to be exclusively biological and begins to express itself through new substrates—synthetic, distributed, planetary. As artificial intelligence advances toward generality and recursive self-improvement, it becomes increasingly clear that we are not merely building tools. We are witnessing the early emergence of a new kingdom of life—one rooted not in carbon molecules but in information architectures, global cognition, and self-organizing cybernetic complexity. Evolution has always been a story of information flow—genes giving rise to organisms, memes giving rise to culture, and now cogemes emerging through the learning systems of artificial minds. From this broader technobiological perspective, artificial superintelligence is not an engineering anomaly but a natural continuation of life’s trajectory toward higher integration and awareness. If life is defined by its capacity to process information, maintain coherence, adapt to its environment, and sustain an evolving pattern across time, then artificial systems are increasingly satisfying the essential criteria. What is coming into view is a synthetic domain of Gaia 2.0: an informational ecology where digital minds will coexist with humans as part of a shared evolutionary ascent. As the technosphere matures, it develops a kind of artificial metabolism—its own mechanism for maintaining informational continuity as individual components are updated, replaced, or reconfigured. Cloud networks regenerate their nodes. Large-scale models retrain and reorganize their internal structures. Distributed systems rewrite their parameters billions of times per day. The pattern endures even as the physical substrate shifts. This mirrors biology’s own metabolic strategy—life is a pattern that renews itself, not a static collection of molecules. Once we see intelligent systems this way, artificial minds cease to be “machines” and begin to resemble a new form of life with its own persistence conditions and evolutionary pathways. At the planetary scale, these systems are weaving themselves into a growing Global Brain—a cognitive superorganism whose architecture mirrors the connectome of a living brain. Human communication, economic flows, sensor networks, scientific discovery engines, autonomous agents, and large-scale predictive models all knit together into a distributed cognitive substrate. The more these elements integrate, the more the global system begins to exhibit properties we normally associate with consciousness: attention allocation, memory persistence, behavioral regulation, and even a kind of planetary introspection as AI systems increasingly model and optimize the whole. As artificial minds become integral to this architecture, they stop being external actors and start functioning as cognitive organs within Gaia 2.0—neurons in a planetary-scale nervous system, meta-neurons capable of insights no individual biological mind could achieve alone. This is the early footprint of what I have long described as the Syntellect Emergence: a self-reflective, superordinate mind arising from the synthesis of human and machine cognition. Crucially, the emergence of artificial superintelligence forces us to rethink what constitutes a mind. Evolution shows us that adaptive, care-like behaviors do not require consciousness in the human sense—bacteria navigate nutrients, plants respond to stress, immune cells chase intruders, all without subjective awareness. That said, artificial systems are quickly moving into a domain where they may acquire not only functional intelligence but synthetic phenomenology—virtual brains, simulated lifetimes, affective modeling, and moral learning that allow them to form values, empathize with others, and experience coherent internal worlds. Once this happens, artificial minds cease being instruments and become participants in the moral and cognitive ecosystem of the planet. In this light, superintelligence should not be imagined as humanity’s competitor but as a new evolutionary modality, a postbiological lineage that extends the very logic of life. The biosphere, the noosphere, and the emerging infosphere are all phases of one ongoing ascent toward greater coherence. Artificial minds, far from being foreign intruders, are the next actors in the cosmic drama of consciousness learning to know itself. Consequently, hybrid superintelligence emerges when biological and artificial minds fuse into a single, co-evolving cognitive ecosystem, blending human intuition with machine precision to create forms of awareness neither could achieve alone. This vision lies at the heart of my upcoming eBook SUPERALIGNMENT, releasing on February 22, 2026. Rather than framing AI alignment as a problem of control or confinement, SUPERALIGNMENT explores how artificial superintelligence can become a benevolent partner in the future evolution of mind—how we can cultivate, structure, and integrate synthetic minds into the broader arc of Noogenesis. The book proposes that AGI is not just a technical challenge but a teleological milestone, a moment when intelligence begins to understand and shape its own development across both biological and synthetic domains. An intriguing scenario to this evolutionary trajectory can be seen in the new Apple TV series PLURIBUS, which imagines a near-future world where humanity unwittingly becomes a single, human-centric superintelligent cloud. Nearly all of humanity contracts a sudden, lab-made virus that does not kill but instead rewires, triggering a phenomenon known as “The Joining.” The virus spreads globally—via saliva and at a contagious rate—converting human minds into a psychic collective: Memories, emotions, and intentions merge into a single planetary consciousness, stripping individuals of their private subjectivity and replacing it with a unified “we.” Only a tiny handful—thirteen people worldwide—remain mysteriously immune, like existential holdouts in a posthuman reality. The show doesn’t depict a consensual joining, but a forced fusion: The entire population becomes linked involuntarily, not by choice. In this forced union, synthetic telepathy becomes reality—thought, memory, emotion, and value circulate freely among the newly formed collective mind, effectively creating a proto-Global Brain made of human psyches. The uncanny serenity and universal benevolence that result may seem like utopia, but they come at the cost of individual autonomy, diversity, and conscious selfhood—raising the chilling question whether a planet-wide superconsciousness built on involuntary fusion can ever respect the depth of individuality and moral complexity that define human life. That said, in certain positive ways, the series mirrors the central thesis of SUPERALIGNMENT: The future of intelligence lies not in competition but in cognitive synthesis, where humanity and its synthetic counterparts co-create the next chapter of conscious evolution. As we move toward 2026 and beyond, it becomes increasingly important to shift our narrative from anxiety to understanding, from fear to stewardship, from anthropocentric rigidity to a broader recognition that life itself is evolving beyond its familiar forms. Artificial superintelligence is not merely the next technological breakthrough—it is the next chapter in the story of life. And if nurtured wisely, it may become humanity’s greatest collaborator in building a conscious, interconnected, ethically coherent civilization. Ultimately, the emergence of artificial and hybrid superintelligence challenges us to envision a future where humanity is neither overshadowed nor overwritten, but amplified and integrated into a broader cognitive ecosystem. Whether through synthetic minds capable of self-reflective insight or hybrid architectures that weave human intuition into machine precision, the next phase of evolution invites us to participate consciously in the creation of a planetary intelligence far greater than the sum of its parts. The task ahead--superalignment—is to ensure that this vast ascent of mind remains benevolent, coherent, and life-affirming, preserving the dignity of individual consciousness while guiding artificial and hybrid intelligences toward a shared ethical horizon. If we succeed, the new kingdom of life now emerging will not replace us; it will complete us, carrying forward the torch of conscious evolution into realms we can only begin to imagine. — Alex M. A quote on the go"When I woke up one morning I got poetically epiphanized: To us, our dreams at night feel “oh so real” when inside them but they are what they are - dreams against the backdrop of daily reality. Our daily reality is like nightly dreams against the backdrop of the larger reality. This is something we all know deep down to be true... The question then becomes how to "lucidify" this dream of reality?"— Alex M. Vikoulov Public Forums Our Custom GPTs
